The Foundation

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) is a private grant-making Foundation with a U.S. home office in Omaha, Nebraska, and a global office in Kigali, Rwanda.  With annual spending in excess of $500 million, it is one of the largest private foundations in the U.S. The Foundation is unusual for donors of such size as it has only two main areas of grant making: 1) supporting efforts to reduce unintended pregnancy and ensure access to safe abortion for women in the U.S. and around the world and 2) to enable low-income students in Nebraska to attend and succeed in college. The Foundation currently employs over 50 staff across 14 states in the U.S. and 8 staff in Kigali, Rwanda.

 

Unit Description

This role will be part of the Foundation Operations Team, currently a five-person team consisting of the following members: VP, People Operations and Organizational Effectiveness, VP, Financial and Business Operations, Operations Coordinator, Accounting and Payroll Manager, and IT Manager. The Operations Team is a central, cross cutting unit, intersecting every facet and team within the Foundation in some way.

 

Summary

This role will support the core accounting functions for the Foundation while also serving as a liaison between the program areas and budgeting/financial reporting. As a key player on a small team, duties will be 50% accounting support and 50% program area support, budgeting, and process development. The successful candidate will provide budget and accounting support to staff in both the US and Rwanda. While this role will interact with all divisions within the Foundation, it is an individual contributor role with no supervisory responsibilities.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as internal liaison to Program Areas for financial reporting and forecasting.
  • Assist in the development of financial competency training for program area staff who work with grant budgets and financial reporting.
  • Improve and lead annual budgeting process. Create, manage, and distribute internal financial management reporting.
  • Execute journal entries in the general ledger. Reconcile general ledger accounts and monitor expense accounts.
  • Improve the integration and transmission of data between external applications and the general ledger.
  • Oversee cash management, forecasting, and cash flow activities for the Foundation.
  • Assist with regulatory reporting in two countries, support the annual audit, and participate in the preparation of materials for the annual tax return.
  • Oversee business insurance programs and executes annual audits related to insurance coverage.
  • Develop internal monitoring and review processes to ensure the accurate and timely recording of grants and expenditures.

Your Background and Experience

Minimum

  • 8+ years of experience as a staff accountant, auditor, or similar.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or similar
  • Experience with executing journal entries and performing account reconciliations.
  • You approach new situations with an eye on risks and mitigating controls.
  • You are excited by opportunities to develop new processes or improve existing processes.
  • You lean into new technologies and are comfortable with change.

Preferred

  • Experience in a nonprofit setting.
  • Have prepared and/or reviewed financial statements.
  • Worked with a remote workforce.
  • Experienced in global accounting operations.

 

Hiring Requirements

Benefits & Compensation

The minimum salary for this role is $137,000. Compensation is determined by a variety of factors including candidate’s individual qualifications, experience relative to the requirements of the role, and internal equity. STBF offers a robust and generous benefits package.
