General Summary of Purpose:

As our Director of Accounting & Controller, you will be responsible for managing and directing all aspects of the accounting functions by establishing and maintaining the company’s accounting systems, procedures, and policies for the OTC parent company and its subsidiaries across multiple business units, locations and countries. Responsibilities include financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and analysis. Oversees the Financial Services, Treasury and Tax functions. Serves as a strategic partner to the SVP of Finance and to senior management.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and oversees Accounting functions of the organization in multiple locations including international.
  • Ensures that effective internal controls are in place and ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
  • Oversees preparation of financial reports to include annual, quarterly, and monthly operating results for internal and external purposes.
  • Manages the quarterly and year-end financial certification process and all other filing and reporting requirements with the parent company, Berkshire Hathaway
  • Contributes to the company’s short- and long-range planning, identifying areas of possible growth, expansion, and new profit opportunities.
  • Ensures the credibility of the Accounting group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends, and forecasts.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with senior executives providing analysis and recommendations on financial operations.
  • Oversees the Financial Services department including credit, collection, payment card processing, fraud prevention, and disbursements maximizing returns while limiting risk.
  • Manages the Tax department including overseeing all aspects of the Company’s tax strategies and compliance, including managing both domestic and international external advisors and serves as the senior contract with the Berkshire Hathaway Tax group.
  • Manages the Treasury function overseeing the forecasting of sources and uses of cash, and the overall liquidity position both on a short-term and long-term basis.
  • Leads the Company’s acquisition due diligence and integration efforts and contributes to financial modeling (including valuations, deal structures, etc.) and contract negotiation.
  • Oversees the Enterprise Resource Planning platform and other back-office systems supporting the business.
  • Directs the company’s non-inventory purchasing policies, procedures, and strategies. Identifies and analyzes opportunities for driving value.
  • Directs, coaches, and mentors’ staff to ensure engagement and productivity levels are maintained; provides regular and consistent feedback and communication throughout the year and during goal setting and follow-up sessions and performance reviews.
  • Acts as the primary contact for internal and external auditors.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Abides by all policies and procedures of Oriental Trading Company.
  • Must be able to attend face to face meetings on short or little advance notice.
  • Work in the Finance Department office environment requires in-person collaboration among colleagues and contractors.

 

Here’s what you need to join the fun:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required
  • CPA is desirable
  • Requires 10-15 years’ experience in progressively responsible accounting leadership
  • Previous experience in a senior accounting leadership role desirable
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills - ability to identify and define accounting problems, evaluate alternatives, and implement effective solutions. 
  • Ability to manage a variety of special projects and compile/develop a variety of special reports.
  • Ability to be exacting, thorough, and attentive to detail, while still meeting required deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of variable interest entities, accounting practices and procedures for financial and tax reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to organize and prioritize projects.
  • Comfort level working within a dynamic and complex organizational structure
  • Strong work ethic and results orientation
  • Sense of urgency working in a time-sensitive environment, able to multi-task with strong attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and interface effectively with senior management
  • Excellent PC skills, advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Able to perform job duties in a safe manner.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance
